Air Fryer Jalapeño Poppers with Crispy Potato Chip Topping
These air fryer jalapeño poppers are stuffed with cream cheese, sharp cheddar, crispy bacon and scallions, then finished with the part that makes them a little different: a crunchy coating of crushed potato chips and Parmesan.
They cook at 375°F until the topping is golden and crisp and the peppers are tender. No panko, no deep frying and no oil spray needed.
They’re easy enough for a weeknight snack, but they also work great for game day, parties or any situation where vegetables somehow end up covered in cheese and bacon.
Air Fryer Jalapeño Popper Ingredients
- 6 large jalapeños
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 2 scallions, thinly sliced
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- A couple dashes Worcestershire sauce
- ½ cup crushed potato chips
- 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
How to Make Jalapeño Poppers in the Air Fryer
- Using my favorite kitchen knife, slice the jalapeños in half lengthwise. Remove the seeds and white membranes.
- In a bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, crumbled bacon, most of the scallions, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper and Worcestershire sauce until evenly combined.
- Fill each jalapeño half generously with the cream cheese mixture.
- Combine the crushed potato chips and Parmesan cheese. Press the filled side of each jalapeño directly into the chip mixture so you get a good crunchy layer on top.
- Arrange the poppers topping-side-up in a single layer in the Gourmia air fryer.
- Air fry at 375°F / 190°C for about 8–10 minutes, until the topping is golden and crisp and the peppers are tender.
- Let the poppers rest for 2–3 minutes before serving. Finish with the remaining sliced scallions.
Why the Potato Chip Topping Works
Crushed potato chips give these poppers a bigger, crunchier topping than plain breadcrumbs, and because the chips already contain oil, you don’t need to spray the tops before air frying.
Mixing the chips with Parmesan adds salty, savory flavor and helps the topping brown. Pressing the filled side of each pepper directly into the mixture also helps it stay put once the air starts circulating.
Tips for the Best Air Fryer Jalapeño Poppers
- Use larger jalapeños if you can. They’re easier to fill and give you a better cream-cheese-to-pepper ratio.
- Remove the white membranes for less heat. That’s where a lot of the jalapeño’s heat lives.
- Don’t pulverize the chips. You want coarse crumbs so the finished topping still looks and tastes crunchy.
- Press the topping on. Don’t just sprinkle it over the peppers. Pressing the filled side into the chip mixture gives you better coverage.
- Keep them topping-side-up. There’s no need to flip these.
- Start checking at 8 minutes. Your pepper size and air fryer can change the cook time.
- Let them rest. The cheese filling is extremely hot right out of the air fryer, and a couple minutes gives it time to settle.
Air Fryer Jalapeño Popper FAQs
How long do jalapeño poppers take in the air fryer?
At 375°F, mine take about 8–10 minutes. Start checking around 8 minutes and cook until the topping is golden and the peppers are tender.
Do I need to pre-cook the jalapeños?
No. The peppers go into the air fryer raw after they’re halved, seeded and filled.
Do I need panko or breadcrumbs?
No. This version uses crushed potato chips mixed with Parmesan for the crispy topping.
Do I need to spray the tops with oil?
No. The potato chips already contain enough fat to crisp and brown in the air fryer.
How can I make jalapeño poppers less spicy?
Remove the seeds and scrape out the white membranes before filling the peppers. Jalapeños still vary naturally, so some peppers may be hotter than others.
Can I make them ahead?
You can make the filling and prep the peppers ahead of time. For the best texture, add the crushed-chip topping shortly before air frying so it stays crisp.
